Magistrates hand out suspended sentence and three-year ban to repeat offender

Magistrates slapped a Northampton drink-driver with a suspended prison sentence after he was caught over the limit twice in 22 DAYS.

Andrew Wayne Johnson, aged 48, blew more than three times the limit when he was stopped in an Audi A4 on Fairground Way, near the Riverside retail park on August 26

He was bailed by police — but then collared again on September 17 driving the same vehicle in Adelaide Street, this time with slightly less than three times the drink-drive limit.

Johnson was handed a three-year ban and suspended jail sentence after tests showed he was driving over the limit twice in 22 days in Northampton

Court documents showed Johnson, of Flaxwell Court in the town, had 114 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his breath on August 26 and on the second occasion he blew 102 micrograms. The legal limit is 35mg.

Johnson was sentenced to a total of 12 weeks in prison for the two offences, suspended for 12 months, and banned from driving for three years. He was also ordered to pay £154 surcharge to fund victim services and £100 towards prosecution costs.

Magistrates also ruled he should have treatment for alcohol dependency during the next six months.

Northamptonshire Police revealed this week 45 drivers were arrested or charged during the first two weeks of its pre-Christmas crackdown on drink and drug-driving.

The campaign, which kicked off early to include the football World Cup, runs until January 2 and will see a greater number than usual roadside breath tests.
